Thank you for taking some time to get to know me. To be honest, ten years ago, I never thought that I would be here sharing this story with you today. In 2003, I graduated from Colorado State University, married my college sweetheart, Emily, in 2004, and by 2005 was six figures in debt with a corporate mortgage banking job I despised. Today, I am so lucky and blessed to have an amazing Leadership Team and team at M & E Painting that runs the company without me. This has allowed me to focus on MattShoup.com and has freed up my time and energy to spend with my family and the hobbies I love (Jiu Jitsu and travel). Below you can read my story. Better yet, check out this interview I did with a good friend of mine that pretty much sums up my story and what I am up to today (BONUS: there are stories of things we have done to grow M & E Painting which are pretty funny, as well some high value business tips for any of you who are entrepreneurs).
In March of 2005, I was “let go” from my corporate banking job (we never really got along anyway). Looking back, it was the best thing that ever happened to me, however, at the time I was scared, yet encouraged beyond belief to go make things happen. I decided that day I would never work for a boss again.
I quickly founded M & E Painting with the last $100 I had to my name. A few years in, we got our heads above water enough for me to breathe, and in 2007, I decided I wanted to build a business that would work for me, not the other way around. At that moment, I got very intentional about my business, my vision, and my action plan to get there. I set some big goals to grow a phenomenal brand in the community, give back to the community and team that serve me, as well as “retire” so I can enjoy the things in life outside of business. When I say “retire”, I mean have a life where I wake up every day and do what I want to do with whom I want to do it, and not be run and controlled by my business.
In 2015, I celebrated my “retirement” at the age of 34. Today, I am not actively involved in the daily operations of M & E Painting, as it is run by my rockstar Leadership Team. I am intensly focused on coaching them as they grow the company. To date, we have done around $18 million of house painting in Northern Colorado, done some really cool things in our community, and inspired lots of other entrepreneurs to do the same. Along my journey, I realized my gift to inspire and encourage other entrepreneurs accomplish their dreams, goals and aspirations. That is the purpose behind MattShoup.com
Today, I enjoy free time to spend with my lovely wife, Emily, my 8-year-old son, Riley, and my 5-year-old daughter, Hailey. We love to travel, especially to Spain, and we plan to live there during the summer of 2016. I also train, compete and instruct children in Gracie Jiu Jitsu where I hold a purple belt from Royce Gracie. Here are some videos of me competing.
I hope my story inspires and encourages you! Whether you reached out to learn more about me, M & E Painting or were just clicking around on our website, I am glad you landed here.
I look forward to connecting with you.
